I mean, Iowa will have had gay marriage for more than 200 years.
If one absolutely must portray homophobia in their Star Trek fic, I can think of no character less likely to be a bigot than Kirk.

pretty much any movie set in WW1 fits my criteria
I think I have different definition of "sad movie" than others because when I recently asked on Facebook for suggestions of "movies with sad endings", I got a lot of movies where the main characters died but you felt sad but good when what I really wanted was movies where your entire faith in humanity was crushed into tiny bits.
